Organic Ant Control

An infestation of ants in your lawn can be a very unsightly problem. Ant hills don't exactly add to the aesthetic qualities of your yard or garden. The best organic method I know of to rid yourself of ants is to mix up a slurry of orange peels. There is a chemical in the peel and pulp of oranges that is toxic to ants. Dilute the slurry with orange juice and pour the solution right in the ant hills.

Depending upon the area, diatomaceous earth may also be a good choice. It is non-toxic in that it is simply VERY tiny ground up bones. To you it will feel somewhat like sand, but to small insects it is like walking on huge, jagged pieces of glass. Either they get killed or they move out of the area. Simply spread the earth over areas of concern (it will wash out with a good rain, so make sure you are going to have at least a short dry spell and re-apply after heavy rains). It will actually work it's way into the soil and help with aeration also.

I have also heard that the mix below will do a pretty good job. I haven't tried it.

  • 2 parts molasses
  • 1 part sugar
  • 1 part dry yeast
